JUNEAU SCHOOL DISTRICT
2009/2010 SCHOOL YEAR START TIMES
Frequently Asked Questions

What time will my school start?
o Auke Bay, Gastineau, Glacier Valley, Harborview, and Riverbend Elementary Schools: 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
o Mendenhall River Elementary School 8:00 am – 2:45 pm (Friday is an early out day with students leaving at 12:30 pm)
o Middle Schools: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (no change)
o High Schools: 9:15 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.
o Montessori and Charter School: 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

What will my bus schedule be next year?
As in prior years, bus schedules will be available in August right before
the start of the school year. The schedules will be posted on the
Juneau School District website and are typically published in the
newspaper.

Is it true that some elementary school students could have
longer bus rides with the new schedule?

Although this was a possible scenario early in the process, the district
decided to add buses to alleviate this problem. Bus rides will remain
the same.

Will different ages be riding the bus together?
There generally will not be mixed ridership of elementary, middle and
high school students. The one exception is Montessori students who
currently ride high school buses and will probably continue to do so
next year.

What happens to my activities practices?
Coaches and advisors are working on scheduling activities for next
year. Most sports and activities have indicated that the time change
generally can be accommodated. Those other sports and activities are
working to resolve scheduling problems due to facilities availability.
There will be additional recreational space available next year with
Harborview gym re-opening, with after-school district-supported rental
time at Dimond Field House, the availability of the new TMHS turf field,
as well as the two new gyms which came on line at TMHS this year.

Will it still be possible to have elementary activities?
Activities conducted outside of regular school hours at the elementary
schools will still be available. Groups like Marathon Club, Juneau
Jumpers and music classes can be held after school now even if they
used to take place in the morning.

Can I still have a job?
High school students will still be able to participate in after school jobs,
internships, job shadowing and volunteer work. Juniors and seniors
attending JDHS can get out of school for Co-op, internships, job
shadowing or get an off-campus for other employment. Students at
TMHS will be allowed to participate in school-sponsored Co-op jobs,
internships and job shadowing or take UAS classes during school
hours. Both schools will have closed campuses next year for freshmen
and sophomores.

Will classes be offered in zero hour?
High schools will continue to provide zero hour and seventh hour
classes in some specialized subjects. The high schools are currently in
the process of creating their schedules for next year.
How early can I drop off my elementary school student?
Schools have playground supervision beginning at 7:45 am. Some
elementary schools have a breakfast program that begins at 7:30 am.

Will RALLY costs go up?
After-school care costs in RALLY will be adjusted to the new schedule.
The new costs will be comparable to the current fees at Glacier Valley
and Mendenhall River Community School, both of which already have
an early start. For more information on RALLY visit jsd.k12.ak.us.
Can the RALLY program support additional students?
The RALLY program is staffed based on the number of students
enrolled in the program. If the demand for RALLY services goes up
with new schedule, the number of employees will be adjusted to
accommodate the change.

When do teachers start work?
Teacher day is 7.5 hours from start to finish usually with half an hour
before and after student start time. As 8:00 am to 2:30 pm and 9:15
am to 3:45 pm is six and a half hours, 7:30 am to 3:00 pm or 8:45
am to 4:15 pm would be the standard teacher contract time.
