A Message From Barbara Cadiente-Nelson

Director of the Juneau School District Indian Studies Program

 2/4/2010 Update

Hello,

Goldbelt Heritage Foundation is partnering with JSD to offer an advanced film making class. While learning the latest, greatest editing software from the pros, students will be immersed in the wisdom of Tlingit Elders--footage of interviews conducted by Tlingit high school students during the 2009 Wooshteen Kana_x_tulaneegi Haa At Wuskoowu Conference of Tlingit Tribes and Clans.  Project outcomes will be podcasts, films, etc. to be  shared via  the web.

This 7th hour class will occur February 9 through May 13 at Thunder Mountain High School Technology Lab.  It is open to all JDHS and TMHS students; however, interested students should sign up NOW since the class size is limited.  Call 780-1968

Please share this announcement with families with high school aged children.

Gunalcheesh Goldbelt Heritage Foundation!

Vision

Mission

Goals

The primary goals of the Indian Studies Program for the next 3-5 years are:

  • To promote pride in culture, heritage, and self in Native students, along with the acceptance and understanding of Native cultures by non-Native students:
  • To increase the overall academic success of Native students by extending learning to after-school clubs and Saturday sessions. Cultural and language learning, along with academic skills, will be stressed and there will also be fun and recreation;
  • To provide training and support to regular classroom teachers in grades K-8; and
  • To involve parents and families working with the Indian Studies staff, teachers, and students in order to make a difference in each student's academic success.

Indian Studies is funded by the US Department of Education, Title V Indian Education Act, and supported by the Juneau School District.
