The Alaska Reads Act
The Alaska Reads Act
Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader
The Alaska Reads Act, effective in the 2023-24 school year, aims to assist students in achieving reading proficiency at or above grade level by the end of third grade.
The Alaska Reads Act incorporates a district reading intervention program:
- Students in K-3 will be assessed three times yearly.
- Students who are identified as below proficient will receive additional support through an individualized Reading Improvement Plan (IRIP).
- The school and family in partnership will consider retaining students who do not show improvement. (Parents will make this decision).
- After 3rd grade, students who do not show growth during the school year can attend a 20-hour summer reading program
