Canvas vs PowerSchool - What's the Difference?

Canvas is a learning platform that allows teachers to provide day-to-day instructional support for students and their guardians in a safe online environment. PowerSchool is used to document academic records. Following is a list of the different functions of PowerSchool compared to Canvas. Both platforms are an integral part of instruction at the Juneau School District. Here are some of their differences:

PowerSchool is good for viewing:

  • Attendance

  • Historical Grades

  • Transcripts

  • Demographics

  • Courses

  • Schedule

  • Report Cards

  • Enrollment

Canvas is best for accessing:

  • Assignments

  • Events

  • Discussions

  • Announcements

  • Assessments

  • Grades

  • Calendar

  • Learning tools

How is Canvas “better” for checking student grades/learning?

PowerSchool excels at student information whereas Canvas is better for communicating student learning. Using Canvas, parents have the opportunity to see the assignments and other events from ALL courses posted on ONE calendar.

Canvas Observers can see the assignment directions, expectations, and upcoming assignments. In Canvas parents can also see WHEN an assignment was submitted as all activity is digitally time stamped.
