Superintendent Finalists Announced

The Juneau School District Board of Education is pleased to announce three outstanding finalists for the position of Superintendent:  Mr. Shawn Arnold, Mr. Kevin Shipley, and Dr. Carlee Simon. The Board is excited to move into the final phase of the search process with such high-quality educational leaders.

Mr. Shawn Arnold brings direct, recent experience in Juneau alongside a proven record as a superintendent in Alaska. He previously served as Superintendent of Valdez City Schools, where he led district improvement efforts and built strong relationships with staff, families, and the community. Currently serving as a principal in the Juneau School District, Mr. Arnold offers an in-depth understanding of JSD’s students, staff, and local context, and a demonstrated commitment to Alaska’s unique educational opportunities and challenges.

Mr. Kevin Shipley currently serves as Superintendent of Evadale (TX) Independent School District, where he has led district operations, instruction, and community engagement. His background also includes work with Sealaska Heritage Institute, giving him experience with Alaska Native culture, partnerships, and culturally responsive education. Mr. Shipley brings a combination of executive leadership experience, fiscal and operational oversight, and a strong focus on building collaborative relationships with families, staff, and community organizations.

Dr. Carlee Simon brings a broad blend of higher-education and K–12 leadership experience. She has previously served with the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS), connecting her to the region’s postsecondary and workforce pathways, and she formerly served as Superintendent of Alachua County (FL) Public Schools, a large and diverse district. Dr. Simon offers a strong background in systems-level change, data-informed decision-making, and strategic planning, along with a commitment to equity and academic excellence for all students.

“The Board is thrilled to introduce three candidates of this caliber to our community,” said the Juneau School District Board of Education member, Dr. David Noon, who chaired the search committee. “Each finalist brings a unique set of strengths, a deep commitment to students, and a passion for public education. We are confident that our next superintendent will build on Juneau’s strengths and work collaboratively with stakeholders to support every student’s success.”

The next steps in the process will include interviews with the Board, engagement opportunities with staff and community members, and final reference and background checks.
