Family Update - Glacial Outburst Flood

Posted on by Juneau School District

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning today for the Mendenhall River. At this time, the peak is expected late Wednesday afternoon. The City and Borough of Juneau issued an emergency alert via text that evacuation is advised for people in the impacted area.

Kax̲dig̲oowu Héen Elementary School, Thunder Mountain Middle School, and Mendenhall River Community School are in the evacuation advisory area. These locations will close at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 12, and will remain closed until flood waters recede and the “All Clear” is issued by the City and Borough of Juneau.

The Juneau School District will be monitoring the situation closely with Juneau’s Unified Command, and will determine and communicate by noon Wednesday, August 13, whether schools will be closed on Thursday, August 14. Notifications will be sent via automated calls, emails, texts, the JSD App (Apple IOS), and the district website.

If a school closure is necessary, the district plans to close all schools.

All extracurricular activities and school-sponsored events at all schools are canceled Tuesday and Wednesday. In addition, Freshman First at Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé, scheduled for Wednesday, is canceled, and class lists will not be posted at the three schools in the evacuation area.

The safety of our staff and students is always our number one priority.
