About Our District

The Juneau School District (JSD) is home to approximately 4,000 public school students. It is the fifth largest district in the State of Alaska. The District has six elementary schools; two middle schools, two medium sized high schools, an alternative high school, a Pre-K-8 Montessori School and a K-8 Charter School. Other District programs include the HomeBRIDGE home school, a residential youth facility and the Tlingit Culture, Language and Literacy (TCLL) program. 


JSD’s student population is 43% white, 24% multi-ethnic, 13% Alaska Native & American Indian, 10% Asian & Pacific Islander, 10% hispanic and 1% black. Twenty-three percent of students receive Free & Reduced Meals and 20% receive special education services.


The Juneau School District is one of the largest employers in the community, with about 660 full time employees, 338 of which are certified teaching staff. 


Juneau, Alaska's capital is the third largest city in the state and one of the most beautiful state capitals in the nation. Juneau is located in the Panhandle of Southeast Alaska in the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in North America. Only accessible by sea and air, Juneau is 900 air miles north of Seattle and 600 air miles southeast of Anchorage. The population of Juneau is about 32,000.
