Glacial Flood Procedures

Posted on by Juneau School District

Currently, Juneau’s Unified Command predicts that the glacial basin will reach capacity on Monday, August 11. Once the basin begins to release, a flood warning will be issued by the National Weather Service and the Unified Command will send out evacuation advisories through a variety of communication channels.

When the evacuation advisory is issued, CBJ and JSD will coordinate on school closures. There are three schools along the river that could experience flooding. However, because this event has the potential to impact many people in our community, including staff at other schools, if it is necessary to close any schools the district plans to close all schools. Expect schools to be closed for the length of time of the evacuation advisory.

School closures

If possible, school will be cancelled in advance of the school day.

If the evacuation advisory happens during the school day, the district may release students in the evacuation area early, as necessary based on expected timing of the release.

If a school is evacuated, students and staff will be relocated to a safe location outside the evacuation zone for parent reunification. Students will be released only to guardians and emergency contacts listed in PowerSchool; photo ID must be provided in all situations. Anticipate that it will take time to release students in an orderly way, so please be patient. Student security and accountability are our main concerns.

Announcements from the school district will include location and time for parent pickup. If time permits, depending on the information in the advisory, there will be an opportunity for parents to pick up students at their school before they are relocated to another location.

It is possible that bus riders who attend schools in other areas, but live in the evacuation area, may be bused to a central location outside the evacuation area for parent pickup rather than being transported into the evacuation zone.
