| This unit of practice is designed to be completed over the course of a school year. Students will spend 30 minutes per week as a class with the instructor for the first six weeks of each trimester. This unit lends itself to an end of the trimester culmination projects as many media literacy and technology introduced throughout the trimester will be utilized. It is designed for fourth and fifth graders, and with modification may be appropriate for third graders or middle school students.
Students will need access to computers and digital camcorders, parents, television, radio, newspapers, the Internet, etc., as described in each of the tasks. Ideally, this unit will be instructed in Riverbend's library (when the librarian is not instructing classes), where there are tables, a multimedia projector, adequate computers (10) and other resources (books, newspapers, and magazines, adjacent Project Studio and computer lab with video equipment). Students will receive additional assistance, when needed, in the Riverbend EL Project Studio. The media literacy teacher will instruct the 30 minute lessons. With the cooperation of the building technology assistant, participating classroom teachers and the media literacy teacher, classes will produce culminating projects each trimester. Note: This Unit of Practice intentionally is not addressing the computer as a subject for media literacy. Students have recently received a unit of instruction on this topic. |
