What is the Extended Learning Art Program?
|
| The JSD Extended Learning Art Program is not currently offered in Juneau elementary schools. Instead, The JSD elementary art teachers are offering extra art opportunities at each school to students who would like more art and benefit from the experience. At Riverbend, Heather Ridgeway, one of our talented JSD art teachers, is offering Friday PM art recesses every other Friday, both primary and intermediate afternoon recesses. Each class may send two students. The classes are held in Mrs. Wittig's EL classroom. If you are interested in participating, please contact your classroom teacher, Ms. Ridgeway, or Mrs. Wittig.
JSD had an Extended Learning Art program for elementary students in grades 3-5 who were identified as having extraordinary talents and artistic gifts. The EL art program will ended in the spring of 2006. Now, ALL elementary students receive an art lesson taught by one of the three district elementary art teacher each trimester. The rest of this webpage refers to the old EL art program. |

Students were qualified or chosen through the review of a portfolio of the student’s original artwork from within a calendar year. Old protocol: A team of art teachers and local artists reviews the portfolio, or collection, of the student’s artwork. As with any qualification process, parents give written permission and obtain a recommendation from a teacher. Application packets for 2006 will be available in elementary school offices, from a teacher, or from the EL Teacher. The application packets are to be delivered to the Assistant Superintendent’s office, at 12th & Glacier, by sometime in April each year. Contact Susan Arnold at the District Office or Sheryl Wittig at Riverbend for this year's exact due date. Students who qualify will be eligible to start in the program next fall. |
