Juneau School District Elementary Art Program

Our Philosophy:
An art program that focuses on mentoring and providing resources for classroom teachers will effectively bring art into the daily lives of children.

Our Goal:
All elementary students in the Juneau School District will experience art as part of their everyday learning. They will have regular instruction in visual art as a core curriculum subject and they will be given opportunities to learn other curriculum subject areas through integrated art experiences.

Program Description:
First...Art Teachers develop 3 master art lessons a year for each grade level, customized for Juneau schools and based on the Juneau Art Curriculum.

Second...Art Teachers model these developed lessons in all classrooms across the District as staff development. Classroom teachers take part, observe, and assist during the lesson.

Third...Art Teachers create Art Resource Kits for each lesson, which adds to a growing “Art Kit Library” for classroom teacher check-out.

Fourth... Classroom teachers integrate the techniques modeled for them into other subject areas and check-out the Art kits to extend or adapt lesson ideas on their own. Art Teachers manage this “Art Kit” check-out system throughout the year.

Fifth...Art Teachers facilitate several opportunities throughout the year to highlight student artists and artwork in the community.

Sixth...Art Teachers can be reached at any time by classroom teachers as a resource for art teaching or site-specific art projects.

Our program is modeled after the highly successful Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Art Program developed over the last two decades.

Many of the kits we provide were gifted to our District through a grant called “Project ARTiculate”
