Students/Families in Transition

Students & Families in Transition is a Juneau School District program that addresses and supports the educational needs of students and their families who are in temporary or transitional housing during the school year. The Juneau School District is guided by the McKinney-Vento law.  This law provides homeless and highly mobile students with certain rights so they have access to opportunities that will help them meet the same high academic standards expected of all students in our district.

Who is in Transition?

In general, these students and families lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.  These temporary nighttime residences may be categorized as:

  • doubled-up (temporarily residing with friends or relatives due to lack of permanent/affordable housing),
  • unsheltered (vehicle, trailer, campground, etc.),
  • hotel or motel (due to lack of permanent/affordable housing),
  • inadequate conditions (lack of heat, electricity, water, overcrowded, etc.),
  • shelter (AWARE, St. Vincent de Paul), or
  • couch-surfing (moving frequently between friends or relatives due to lack of permanent or affordable housing).

 Supports immediately available to students in transition:

  • transportation to the school of origin;
  • basic school supplies and hygiene items;
  • transportation to and from before and after school activities, as grant funding allows; and
  • in the case of a homeless student new to our district, automatic enrollment in school with or without a complete set of records.
