This year, all Juneau schools will release students one hour early on sixteen different Mondays to allow teachers to work together in small groups, focusing on instruction to improve student learning in each classroom. This work centers on methods of instruction and individual student progress.
Lots of evidence from schools and districts across the country shows significant increases in student success when teachers spend structured time analyzing student learning results. Isolated instruction in each classroom moves to a collaborative team environment. These teams share knowledge, support each other and hold one another accountable for student learning.
The teams, called Professional Learning Communities or PLCs, are building blocks of the district’s strategic plan for increasing student success. Staff training changes from single workshops to ongoing job-embedded teacher development. The Monday teacher collaboration time is different from a staff meeting, which revolves around the business matters of a school. Early release meetings focus on instruction, individual student results and schoolwork.
