Drug Testing Program

Mandatory Random Drug Testing for Student Athletes

In an effort to support our student athletes and promote a safe and drug free environment in our schools, the Juneau School District Board of Education unanimously passed Board Policy 1432 on October 5, 2009.  This policy puts into place a mandatory random drug testing program for all student athletes.  Students who test positive for illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco will be deemed ineligible for participation in their sport for the remainder of the season and will be subject to limited participation in other school activities.  This new drug testing process is intended to reinforce the High School Extracurricular Participation Agreement already required and signed by student athletes and their parents or guardians.

Drug Use Prevention Program

This drug testing program for student athletes is just one part of a larger comprehensive community-wide effort to give students the tools to resist the social pressure to use alcohol, drugs and tobacco.  We also want to identify and help students who are already impacted by drug use.  Other elements of the program include strengthening the health curriculum offered to our students, providing educational opportunities for parents and students about drug prevention and drug treatment, and establishing a voluntary random drug testing program for students who want to make a clear statement about their choice to live alcohol, drug and tobacco free.

Voluntary Drug Testing Program for High School Students

Another aspect of promoting a safe and drug-free school environment is the voluntary random drug-testing program, open to all high school students.  This program is completely voluntary and confidential designed to give students another tool to resist using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and/or show their support for a drug-free lifestyle.

In the voluntary program, the school district is not given information about drug test results.  Students who participate are part of an incentives program providing perks and/or discounts at Juneau businesses are eligible for prize drawings. To be participate, a student and parent/guardian (if under 18 years) needs to fill out an informed consent form and return to their school.
