Juneau - The Juneau School District (JSD) and Juneau Education Association (JEA) have been negotiating a new contract since February 2013. At a meeting Tuesday, the parties reached impasse and have mutually agreed to seek mediation.
The Juneau Education Association represents nearly 400 teachers employed by the Juneau School District. This includes classroom teachers as well as school counselors, librarians and specialists such as psychologists and speech, physical and occupational therapists. The current one-year contract expires June 30, 2013.
JSD Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich is optimistic about the process. “We will work with JEA leadership to identify a mediator as soon as possible. We are confident that together we can craft a mutually acceptable contract with our teachers union,” he says.
