2008-2010 the JSD Science Curriculum Committee participated in an arduous process to revise the K-8 science curriculum.  This process included a review of the previous curriculum and practices, current research and methodologies and input from teachers, staff and communities members.  To facilitate the work of aligning district goals, national science benchmarks and standards, and Alaska standards and grade level expectations, we implemented the Curriculum Topic Study approach.  The work of Page Keeley and the Maine Math and Science Alliance serves as the foundation of our K-8 curriculum documents.

Several K-8 teachers along with community members worked to articulate the scope and sequence and the curriculum guides for each grade level.
The scope and sequence provides students with an opportunity to learn key concepts from Kindergarten through 8th grade, in Earth, Life, Physical Science and the Alaska Seas and Rivers curriculum. Currently teachers are working with the curriculum documents to delineate unit activities and the required materials to implement an inquiry-based model of instruction.
