District Improvement

The Juneau School District has a District Improvement Plan. The purpose of this annually revised plan is to increase student achievement and meet the goals of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Currently, the District is in District Improvement Level 4 Corrective Action.  The process for improvement looks at student and district needs and prepares action plans based on researched-based practices.  Each year, the District asks parents and guardians of our students for participation in this process.  Please call the federal programs coordinator at 523-1730 for further questions or email Kimberly Homme for a copy of the latest draft.

Reasons for District Improvement Level 4
Under the federal NCLB Act of 2001, each state determines annually whether or not a school district has made adequate yearly progress (AYP) toward meeting the academic testing standards and additional measures set by the state.

AYP decisions are based on the results of state testing in language arts and math and the district's attendance rate and graduation rate. If the district has not made AYP for two consecutive years in any one of the four areas, it is considered "in need of improvement".

Based on the results of the 2011-2012 academic testing in language arts and math and the district attendance rate and graduation rate, the Juneau School District did not make adequate yearly progress.

By 2014, the AYP goal is that 100% of the students will be proficient on language arts (reading & writing) and math. For 2011-12, Alaska's AYP goals for the percent of students that score proficient or above were: Language Arts–88.58% and Math–83.05%.  In order to make AYP, each of the following subgroups of students must meet the AYP goals: ethnicity, economically disadvantaged, students with disabilities, and students with limited English language proficiency.  In addition, at least 95% of enrolled students must take the test and our graduation and attendance rate must be at least 85%.

Detailed assessment and AYP results for our school district are available on the District Assessment page or on the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development website.

The Juneau School District did not make AYP because the district did not meet annual measurable objective targets in the following areas: Language Arts proficiency for District as a whole; Language Arts proficiency for sub-groups which include the Alaska Native/American Indian, the Economically Disadvantaged, the Students with Disabilitites, and Limited English Proficient Students; Math proficiency for sub-groups which include the Alaska Native/American Indian, the Economically Disadvantaged, and the Students with Disabilities.

The consequences of District Improvement Level 4 Corrective Action require the district to develop and implement a District Improvemet Plan; request technical assistance for the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development; and, set-aside 10% of the district's Title I-A allocation to provide professional development in areas that address the reasons why the district did not make AYP.

Parents can also help by increasing their understanding of the assessments, understanding the importance of good attendance and graduating from school, visiting schools and becoming a volunteer, and engaging in reading and math strategies at home.

Additional information about NCLB and what parents can to do improve student achievement can be found at the U.S. Department of Education Parent page.
