Students enrolled in Thunder Mountain High School’s Economics and Entrepreneurship class recently concluded a successful REAL business venture. Working with Junior Achievement, the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about entrepreneurship and financial literacy, our students made money for themselves and their stockholders.
Students established the company, elected a board of directors, wrote a business plan, chose a product of car license plate frames, and sold stock in their “Falcons Gone Wild” school spirit company. Investors recently received a stockholder letter explaining the process and showing the final Balance Sheet and Income Statement, along with a check that almost doubled their original investment!
With the support and guidance of their teacher, Chris Carte, and Juneau volunteer consultants Brian Holst and Veida Forrest, students not only learned how businesses function, they also learned about the structure of the U.S. free enterprise system and the benefits it provides.

The data in the Report to the Public shows the number of Juneau School District high school students who have taken at least one or more courses in one of the 16 national career cluster areas during the school year 2008-2009. The furthest right column also identifies the number of students who have taken at least 2 credits of courses over the course of their high school career to-date, in one of the career cluster areas, that identifies them as a "concentrator." The courses highlighted in yellow denote the high school courses that have formal agreements with UAS for tech prep, meaning the curriculum is aligned with those UAS classes, and where a student can simultaneously earn high school and UAS credits toward a related program of study.
