Policy 1624 - Assessment of Student Performance

The Board of Education recognizes that a system of measuring, recording, and reporting the growth and achievements of individual students helps each student and his or her teachers and parents to assess progress toward educational goals and standards.

Students shall be informed at the outset of each school year or course of study of the behaviors and achievements that are expected of them.  They shall be kept informed of their progress throughout the year or course.  Grading should reflect demonstrated student progress toward stated goals and expectations.  In addition, students should be encouraged to evaluate their own progress and achievements.  The district encourages conferences and other communications where students present goals, self-evaluations and achievements to parents and others in the community.

The Superintendent shall develop and continually review, in consultation with professional staff members, parents, and students, a grading and reporting system appropriate to the course of study and maturity of students.  Final decision on any contested grade(s) will be the responsibility of the Superintendent.  Students identified as experiencing disabilities will be graded in accordance with their Individualized Educational Programs.
