The Juneau School District announces the beginning of the FY 14 budget process. The Board of Education will appoint the FY 14 Budget Committee at its regular meeting on January 8, 2013 at 6:15 pm in the JDHS Library. This year, the Budget Committee will be expanded to increase the level of participation from community members. The committee will be more than doubled, from seven community members to 17 voting members, including: 12 community members selected by each school site council; up to three at-large community members representing the needs of all students; one teacher member selected by the Juneau Education Association; and one classified staff member selected by Juneau Education Support Staff.
In addition, the committee will include all seven school board members (plus the student representative) as non-voting members. School board member Barbara Thurston along with a community representative will jointly chair the committee.
The full committee will meet seven times, beginning in January 2013 to learn about the District budget, review proposals made by the Superintendent, and hear testimony from the community.
On March 5, 2013, the Budget Committee will make its own budget recommendation to the Board of Education. The Board then approves a final budget and submits it to the City and Borough of Juneau.
