Board of Education Recruiting for Open School Board Seat

The Juneau School District is seeking Juneau residents interested in filling a vacant seat on the Board of Education. Former member Kim Poole submitted her resignation at the November 13, 2012 Board of Education meeting, following her recent move to Oklahoma.

Interested applicants must be qualified as a municipal voter in the school district (per CBJ Charter 13.2, AS 14.12.080 and JSD Policy 8110 and Bylaw 140 - 0144); may not use the office for the primary purpose of obtaining financial gain for him or herself or for his or her spouse, child, parent, or for any business with which he or she may be associated or in which he or she owns stock; may not be an employee of the district; may not be a member of the Alaska Legislature; and must take and sign the oath or affirmation of office prescribed by law.

Applicants will be required to complete a questionnaire and appear before the Board in an open session to provide a statement of interest and answer questions. The date and time of that open session will be announced soon. Applications and questionnaires are available for download below, from the JSD Superintendent's Office at 1208 Glacier Avenue, or by calling 523-1702.

The Board of Education will vote to approve a new member at the next regular meeting scheduled for 6:15 pm on December 11, 2012, in the JDHS Library. According to Board of Education Bylaws, the seat must be filled within 30 days, which falls on December 13, 2012. The new term begins December 13, 2012 and ends when a new member is elected during the 2013 municipal election.
