The JSD Calendar Committee has released two proposals for the 2012-2013 school yera calendar for public comment. There is a four-week comment period, which ends at 4:00 pm, Friday, Feb. 3. All comments will be shared with the Board of Education, before they take action on the calendar at the Tuesday, February 7 meeting at 6:15 pm in the JDHS Library. The Board's first reading of this proposal will occur Tuesday, Jan. 10, however no action taken at that time.

Option A proposes:
- A spring break the third week in March
- Students' last day Friday, May 24
- Teachers' last day Tuesday, May 28
Option B proposes:
- No spring break (to preserve an instructional week prior to SBAs)
- Students' last day May 17
- Teachers' last day Mon., May 20
Here are features shared by BOTH options:
- No early release is proposed at this time, pending the outcome of a McDowell survey of teachers and agreement with employees.
- Numbers of days:
~ Calendar days: 184, same as this year (understanding this is a negotiable item)
~ Teacher work days: 3, same as this year
~ Professional development (in-service) days: 6, 1 more than this year, with a goal of scheduling as much in-service on those days, rather than taking teachers out of the classroom
~ Parent conference days: 4, same as this year
~ Student instructional days: 171, same as this year due to 1 snow day
~ 5-day weeks: 31; this year: 28
- Students start Monday, Aug. 20
- No classes Thursday-Friday, Sept. 27-28
~ Secondary parent conferences
~ Elementary teachers have in-service
- No classes Thanksgiving week, Nov. 19-21
~ An all-teacher work day Monday, Nov. 19
~ Elementary conferences, Nov. 20-21
~ Secondary teachers have in-service
- Winter Break, Monday, Dec. 24-Friday, Jan. 4
- MLK Holiday, Monday, Jan. 21
- District-wide in-service, Tuesday, Jan. 22
- District-wide parent conferences, Thursday-Friday, Feb. 14-15
